Hall of Fame

The Michigan Soccer Association inducts candidates to its Hall of Fame based on an established rubric.  Candidate applications are accepted on a rolling basis.  The candidate application can be found below.

GERHARD MENGEL

Hall of Fame - Class of 2006

Every aspect of amateur soccer in Michigan has been affected in a positive way by Gerhard Mengel.  Among his accomplishments;

  • 1962 – As player/coach, he led Carpathia Kickers to the USSF National Amateur Championship

  • 1962-1973 – Played in, coached and served on the BOD of the Detroit Soccer League

  • 1964 – Founded the Flint Yankee Soccer Club

  • 1972-Present – Attained Emeritus status as a referee after 34 years as a referee, referee instructor, referee assessor, State Referee Administrator, and Founder of Central Michigan Referee Association

  • 1973 – Co-founded the Central Michigan Soccer League

  • 1975 – Was inducted into the Michigan Amateur Sports Hall of Fame

  • 1976 – Became a Michigan Soccer Association BOD Member and, for 30 years, has served as Member at Large, Registrar, President, and currently as Past President

  • 2002 – Inducted into the Michigan State Youth Soccer Hall of Fame

  • 2005 – Recipient of USSF’s Werner Fricker Builder Award

  • 2010– Recipient of USSF’s Life Member distinction

Working in the service of soccer players of Michigan is demanding, time-consuming, and sometimes costly.  Gerhard has devoted a major portion of his life to that service.
